It’s Not About Us: Debate is About the People

The Torres for Congress Committee issues the following statement in response to the delegate’s recent press release:
Debates are not about politicians.
They are about the people. They are about whether those asking for your vote are willing to stand before the public, explain their record, and answer difficult questions.
Why was Guam removed from RECA? Why does the Northern Mariana Islands have SSI when Guam does not? Why is our representative to Washington the only delegate in Guam history to never author a law in 4 years?
Ronald Reagan understood that accountability to the people mattered more than protecting politicians from scrutiny. In 1976, he challenged a sitting Republican president because he believed voters deserved a real choice. And in 1980, Reagan stood on the Republican primary debate stage because he understood leadership meant trusting voters enough to hear the arguments, weigh the answers, and decide for themselves who was prepared to lead.
The people of Guam deserve that same opportunity.
So when a candidate declines to debate, it is not the opposing campaign that loses out. It is the voters.
That is why debates matter. Not because they serve candidates, but because they serve the public.
And anyone asking for the people’s trust should be willing to stand before them openly and earn it.
Senator Torres remains ready to have that conversation anytime, anywhere.
